It’s time to count down the top 10 best TV shows of all time, according to me. Mr. Blonde is taking a hiatus from the site but I will count down the 10 best with an explanation of each. Remember this is my opinion so some shows such as MASH or I Love Lucy which are acknowledged as great shows won’t make the list because I do not watch them. A few really good shows that could have made the list but fell short are The Wonder Years, Simpsons, Family Guy, Rome and the Deadliest Catch. A few years ago I think Simpsons and The Wonder Years would have made it. Family Guy falls short mainly because while I think it’s a great show I rarely watch the new episodes. I watch it in syndication and think it’s hysterical but if it’s not appointment TV then it does not deserve to make the list. Rome is a show that I thought was amazing yet it only lasted two seasons and was on several years ago to make the Top 10. As for Deadliest Catch, I absolutely love it but at the end of the day people would kill me if I classified it as one of the greatest shows. It could make the Top 10 Guilty Pleasures list though! The Honorable Mentions after the jump….
These shows are television shows that I think are amazing, they stand the test of time and I don’t think anyone could argue if they made the Top 10. But for one reason or another they fell short.
Five years ago I think Seinfeld would have made the list. Ten years ago it would have been a lock. While still a great show it does show it’s age when watching it. I miss the adventures of Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer. Seinfeld was a cutting edge show that was ahead of it’s time and some of the episodes like “The Contest” are absolute classics.
I think NYPD Blue is really underrated all these years later. It pushed the envelope, characters swore and they would even have brief nudity. It was also extremely well written. Some of David Milch’s best work. Many television shows would have folded if the lead actor quit at the end of season one. David Caruso walked and Jimmy Smits stepped right in and the show was even better because of it. For 12 seasons NYPD Blue was one of my favorites week in and week out.
One of the best sitcoms ever. Great ensemble and it still makes me laugh when I see it in syndicated reruns. I really struggled with Cheers making the Top 10 or not. In the end it came down to being off the air so long that even though it is a classic that it had been replaced in my heart with others.
Friday Night Lights
I know a lot of people who would argue that this is a Top 5 show and it’s an insult to only have it as an honorable mention. I loved FNL and season 1 is one of the best individual seasons ever. However the show lost me a little with the Landry/Tyra murder story. Season three was good but I kinda lost interest after that. I’ve been meaning to re-watch the entire series and maybe after I do I will feel different.
How I Met Your Mother
The funniest sitcom currently on television. Great cast, Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel kill it. I’m not a huge fan of Josh Radnor’s Ted since he can really drag the show down at times. Overall though it is a great TV show. I know some people say that HIMYM has run its course and should wrap up, I don’t totally agree though. The later seasons are not as great as the first few seasons but they are still better than any other sitcom. Personally, I hope they introduce the mother sooner rather than later. Show how she integrates with the group and end with her wedding to Ted. I think that would be a lot better than Ted meeting her and the show wrapping up.
